Personally I'd rather see elephants happy and free, instead of kept in captivity and performing silly, unnatural tricks for tourists. I recommend going to the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand, the only true sanctuary where elephants aren't forced to perform or give rides, but just loved, fed, and allowed to play and socialize, as elephants should.

They aren't saying elephants aren't abused. They're just saying these probably aren't. Don't assume all captive animals are abused. Most animals develop talents through a system of rewards. It's something I like to call, Psychology.

You may have researched it, but have you actually been there? I have, and have spoken to people who are the leading experts in the country about how the elephants are treated in those camps. Reminds me of Road Rules: Semester at Sea, when Pua went crazy because she thought these exact elephants were being abused. They showed some footage of a trainer using a small whip to correct some of the behavior of the elephant. Well, looking into it more, because of the thickness of the skin of the elephant, the small whip they received is comparable to someone gently touching your shoulder. Although, one can say it's not the hit itself that is abuse, it's the actual threat/etc

And the only reason an elephant got an artificial leg is because the western media picked up on the story and donations (from the west) poured in for it. Unfortunately there are many more legless elephants that get no media attention, and no help.

The Elephant Hospital, which is a part of the Conservation Center that we are arguing about here, has treated over 600 elephants for free AND they are fitting more injured elephants with false legs, like Mocha, AND they have their own campaign to end phajaan. To claim that you happened to meet the ONLY people in the entire country of Thailand that care about elephants is obtuse and insulting. Lek has done wonderful work, but she isn't alone.
