Man, learnt behavior or not, I couldn't teach my dog to do that in a million years, and my dogs surprise me all of the time with how intelligent they are! I don't know how intelligent it says elephants are but it does say alot about the elephants' legendary memory which is because (i believe) they are copying this from memory of another picture given to them. Like you though I just hope they are safe and happy, and not just painting for the enjoyment of people like a sideshow.

when i 1st heard "painting elephant" i thought he was gonna scribble on a canvas but this just caught me absolutely off guard! An animal painting means that is the way they see the world, and with him adding a flower means it understands beauty. Elephants are truely smart mammals that have gained the greatest respect from me.

Unfortunately this elephant is not painting this picture on his own. The elephant's trainer is standing right next to him, pulling on his ear the entire time guiding the elephant's trunk. I was just in Chiang Mai Thailand, at this very camp, watching this elephant having its ear tugged relentlessly.
As for the hooks used to control these elephants, they really do cause a great deal of harm. In fact, one trainer was sitting on his elephants head and using his legs to cover the blood and gashes.

yes its fake, the mahouts do pull their ears, but not hard and it doesnt hurt .. and while there may be some mahouts who abuse the use of the hooks, in general the mahouts at the thai conservation centers really love their elephants. i worked at the center in lampang, thailand this summer and i can assure you there was no form of abuse.

the painting is the work of the trainer, not the elephant. it shows no creativity on the animal's part, as he's just following the prompts to receive rewards. having said that, elephants are truly very intelligent creatures and they deserve respect, whether or not they can paint. this is just an example of how well a well-trained animal and a clever trainer can work together.

The painting process for this elephant is a collaborative process as the mahout (trainer) continually talks to the elephant and touches her ear mostly for conveying confidence. This elephant seems to focus as she repeats detailed strokes.
This is an exceptional elephant and a very sweet process to witness.
